The even greater outdoors

Nevisport was founded by mountain rescue experts to bring the very best outdoor gear to the U.K. Fifty years later, the company remains true to their mission.

Founded in 1970 by Ian A. Sykes, MBE, and Ian D. Sutherland, a pair of highland climbers and expert outdoorsmen, Nevisport originally opened its doors to address an immediate need. At the time, the friends were active members of the Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team, and they found the existing selection of climbing equipment available in stores across the U.K. to be woefully lacking.

The two opened their first Nevisport shop in Fort William, at the foot of Scotland’s legendary Ben Nevis mountain, the tallest peak in the U.K. Sykes, a former member of the RAF Mountain Rescue Team, had managed to save some seed money while serving as a base commander on the British Antarctic Survey team. But for that first year, Sutherland had to keep his full-time day job to support the operation while Sykes worked in the shop.

In just a few short years, their success allowed them to open a second store in Glasgow, then another in Edinburgh. Over the coming decades, the pair grew Nevisport into one of the leading outdoor specialty retailers in the country. Today, Nevisport has 5 stand-alone and 11 dual fascia stores across the U.K. and a reputation around the world for stocking only the finest sporting gear.

Along the way, Sykes and Sutherland opened the U.K.’s highest outdoor shop at the top of the gondola at the Nevis Range ski centre, a hugely successful resort that Sykes played a key role in launching and running. He was ultimately awarded an MBE for “services to sport and mountain rescue.” And though the founders have since retired, their ethos remains, not only in the excellence of Nevisport’s products and customer service, but in the real-world knowledge of its staff.

“The dedication to this ethos continues today with our sales team using the products we sell, ensuring that you receive the correct advice on equipment you need to truly enjoy the outdoors,” the company writes. “Our success and culture are based on the strong tradition of quality, value for money, and genuinely caring for our customers. Today, our team is proud to continue providing the finest service and outdoor gear available, at some of the best prices around.”
